Within a year, I acquired my permits and trapped Mariah, a passage redtail hawk, on November 5, 1994.

In the intervening 14 years, I continued to fly Mariah, simply because she's a gamey old broad. She's caught game in 11 states from Utah to New York City's JFK airport where she caught her first jackrabbit while I worked in bird abatement during the summer. Her list of game caught is impressive, including cottontails, squirrels, ducks, pheasants and about a dozen other species. Three years ago, Mariah broke her leg and during her recuperation, Jack, a captive-bred tiercel Harris' hawk joined the team, becoming the Official Boy Toy of the All-Girl Hawking team. Other members include Maggie, the Golden Wondermutt (aka Queen of the Bunnies), Reba the Silly Bird Dog (German shorthair pointer, who specializes in all hawk quarry, feathered and furry) and the newest member, Zoë Kate the Jack Russell Terrorist, who is in charge of squirrels.

My falconry journey has provided profound insights into my own humanity, the meaning of (my) life and my place in the Universe, along with many other topics in life's mysteries. I look forward to many more years in falconry, eager to discover where it will take me next.

I earned my B.A. degree at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2005, and am currently pursuing a soon-to-be-completed Masters degree in American History. Professionally, I am a freelance writer and public relations consultant in the motorsports and automotive aftermarket industry, former assistant editor for American Falconry magazine, and now editor of THA's quarterly publication, On The Wing.
